Italy marks National Beach Day with tribute to fallen lifeguard
The Italian beach sector is marking the ‘Giornata del Balneare’ (National Beach Day) on August 30. Organized by the Sindacato Italiano Balneari (SIB), the event highlights the economic importance of the industry, which contributes 13.2% to Italy's GDP and employs over 100,000 people. This year, the day serves as a tribute to Fabrizio Valente, a lifeguard who lost his life while attempting to rescue a tourist in Andora.
To honor his memory, lifeguards across various Italian coasts, including Civitanova Marche and the Lazio region, will participate in a symbolic gesture by raising their oars in the sea. The industry is also using the occasion to advocate for structural support, citing challenges such as coastal erosion, administrative uncertainty regarding concessions, and tax pressures.
Simultaneously, maritime authorities are conducting extensive seasonal inspections. In Soverato and Priolo Gargallo, Carabinieri and Coast Guard operations resulted in the seizure of food products and significant fines for hygiene and environmental violations. In Salento, increased patrols via bicycle and horseback are being deployed to ensure public safety and prevent disturbances during the peak tourist season.
