Italian beach clean‑ups in Sicily and Apulia gather volunteers, remove waste and call for better coastal care

Volunteers and local associations cleaned a section of the free beach at Spinazza in Marzamemi, Sicily. The effort, organized by Borgo Sostenibile, Dusty and U. Di. Con., thanked participants and urged Mayor Corrado Figura to improve beach maintenance before August ends.

On Mediterranean Sea Day, WWF Italy and partners conducted a large‑scale cleanup in the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area in Apulia. About 300 kg of debris—including buoys, polystyrene crates and a metal drum—were collected, a stranded turtle was rescued, and the event highlighted ongoing plastic pollution threats in the Mediterranean.

Both actions are part of broader community campaigns to protect Italy’s coastal and marine environments and to promote sustainable stewardship of the sea.
