Italian Episcopal Conference holds autumn session and appoints new commissions
The Permanent Council of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) held its autumn session in Rome from September 21 to 23, led by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi. The discussions focused on the responsibility of transmitting faith in the modern context, echoing Pope Leo XIV’s call for communities to be “more free to announce Christ.”
During the session, the Council appointed members to various Episcopal Commissions for the 2026–2031 term. These appointments include several Sicilian bishops to commissions regarding liturgy, clergy, and social issues, as well as Tuscan bishops to commissions for doctrine, family, and ecumenism.
Additionally, the Council approved the theme for the XXVIII National Eucharistic Congress, to be held in Orvieto from September 23 to 26, 2027: “Unum corpus, multi sumus. L’Eucaristia segno di unità e fermento di pace.” The Council also confirmed a scheduled meeting between the Italian clergy and Pope Leo XIV in Rome on December 11 and 12, marking the first anniversary of the apostolic letter “Una fedeltà che genera futuro.”
