Italian bridge project probe sparks parliamentary demands for transparency

The Rome public prosecutor is investigating the Messina Strait bridge project for alleged corruption and unlawful disclosure of confidential information. Lawmakers from the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party have called on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini to appear before Parliament and explain the irregularities. M5S regional deputy Antonio De Luca said, “The game is over – the government must return what was taken,” while PD senator Nicola Irto demanded, “The government must immediately tell the truth in Parliament.” Critics argue the project has become a political propaganda tool, diverting attention from needed upgrades to rail, road and port infrastructure in Sicily and Calabria.
