Italy faces rising cybersecurity threats and workplace fatalities

Italy is experiencing a significant surge in both cyberattacks and workplace accidents. Data indicates that Italy accounts for approximately 10% of global cyberattacks, despite representing less than 2% of the global GDP. In 2025, serious cyber incidents rose by 49% globally, and in the first half of 2026, the volume of attacks reached 93% of the previous year's total. Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly vulnerable, with 26% reporting successful intrusions and 37% losing clients or partners as a result.

Parallel to digital risks, physical safety in the workplace is declining. In the first nine months of 2026, fatal workplace accidents in Italy increased by 5% compared to the previous year, totaling 823 deaths. The Lazio region reported a 17.7% increase in fatalities, a rate significantly higher than the national average. Reports also highlight increased risks for foreign workers and a notable rise in female mortality rates.

Experts and institutions, including the National Cybersecurity Agency and various labor unions, are calling for enhanced prevention strategies, specialized training, and stricter regulatory compliance to address these evolving threats to economic continuity and human life.
