Italian Carabinieri seize illegal waste sites in Isola del Liri and Taranto

In the town of Isola del Liri, Carabinieri Forestale units seized two areas covering about 350 m² at an auto‑repair workshop that were being used as an uncontrolled dump for hazardous waste, including used oils, batteries, solvents and plastic debris. The sites lacked any system for runoff water collection, raising the risk of soil and groundwater contamination. The workshop owner was released pending judicial proceedings and the officers are pursuing charges of illegal waste management and failure to treat runoff water.

In Taranto, a Carabinieri‑led operation named “I giorni del cielo” resulted in two arrests and the preventive seizure of a large livestock complex comprising three companies, together with assets exceeding €1 million. The investigation began after an Indian laborer died following a fall from a loader. Authorities uncovered severe labor exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and an illegal system for discharging animal waste into an artificial lake situated in a protected landscape area. Charges include aggravated involuntary manslaughter, caporalato (labor trafficking), environmental disaster, illegal waste handling and the employment of irregular foreign workers.
