Italian Carabinieri crack down on tourism labor safety violations

The Carabinieri’s Labour Inspection Unit has carried out a series of extraordinary checks on tourism‑related businesses across several Italian regions. In Senigallia, inspections of a hotel and a restaurant led to two criminal complaints and administrative fines exceeding €13,000 for failures such as missing risk‑assessment documents, lack of medical surveillance, inadequate fire‑prevention measures and an unauthorised video‑surveillance system.

In the Salerno province, 13 hotels and beach establishments were examined; violations were found in all cases, with about 70 % of the 64 positions inspected classified as irregular. The operation resulted in 27 formal prescriptions, fines of €48,205 and additional administrative penalties totalling €86,955, including suspensions of activities and penalties for employing undeclared workers.

Further actions in the Riposto area of the Catania district targeted a local business employing 12 workers. The owner was charged for failing to provide health surveillance for two irregularly employed staff, receiving a fine of €2,847.68, a suspension order, a €2,500 administrative penalty and a €3,900 penalty for illegal labour, with recovery of €2,400 in social‑security contributions.

Overall, the campaign, coordinated by the provincial Carabinieri commands, aims to combat illegal labour (caporalato) and enforce occupational‑health and safety standards in the tourism sector during the peak summer season.
