Italian Carabinieri shut down businesses for illegal waste dumping and workplace safety breaches
The Carabinieri conducted coordinated inspections that resulted in the arrest of a 70‑year‑old shoe‑factory owner in the Campania “Terra dei Fuochi” area. The investigation uncovered extensive illegal storage of hazardous special waste, multiple labor violations—including undeclared workers and lack of insurance—and serious occupational‑safety breaches. The factory’s operations were suspended, the premises and waste were seized, and the entrepreneur was placed under house arrest with penalties totaling about €112,000.
In a separate action in Riposto, Sicily, Carabinieri from the Giarre‑Riposto stations, together with labour‑inspector units, inspected a local pub. They cited the 52‑year‑old proprietor for failing to provide mandatory health‑surveillance examinations for three employees, violating the national safety code. The business was ordered to suspend operations and faced administrative fines of roughly €9,200.
