Italian Catholic leaders criticize proposal to teach Islam in schools

Gianni Toffali and other critics have voiced strong opposition to a proposal by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), to introduce the study of Islam into schools.

Critics argue that such a move represents a betrayal of the Catholic Church's mission to defend and spread the Gospel. They contend that placing Islam on the same level as Christianity promotes religious relativism and contributes to the secularization of Italy. The opposition highlights a perceived lack of reciprocity, noting that while Islam is being promoted in Italy, Christians often face persecution in Muslim-majority nations.

Furthermore, the critiques suggest that the proposal dilutes Catholic religious education into a generic multicultural framework. Opponents maintain that true interreligious dialogue should not obscure the irreconcilable theological differences between Christianity and Islam, such as the divinity of Christ and the Trinity.
