Lega party faces internal crisis over identity and leadership

The Lega party is facing significant internal instability as it grapples with declining consensus and identity crises. Under the leadership of Matteo Salvini, the party has transitioned from a regional Northern movement to a national force. While this shift allowed for growth in Southern Italy, it has created a paradox where Northern leaders, including Attilio Fontana and Luca Zaia, increasingly criticize the party for abandoning its original focus on Northern autonomy and regional interests.

Internal tensions are exacerbated by the rise of competing right-wing movements and the threat of losing parliamentary seats due to lower polling numbers. These struggles have led to calls for a return to the party’s roots and have even sparked the emergence of dissident groups, such as the Area Liberale Federalista, which seeks to challenge the current leadership from the remnants of the original movement.
