Italian Chamber approves day for victims of judicial errors

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill to establish June 17 as a national day to commemorate the victims of judicial errors. The chosen date marks the 1983 arrest of television host Enzo Tortora, who was later fully acquitted after a lengthy legal ordeal.

The proposal, introduced by Member of Parliament Davide Faraone of Italia Viva, passed with 178 votes in favor. However, the vote sparked political controversy due to significant abstentions from the Democratic Party (PD), the Five Star Movement (M5S), and the Green and Left Alliance (AVS).

Opposition members defended their abstention by citing a lack of sufficient debate within the Commission and questioning the practical effectiveness of a commemorative day held during school summer holidays. Conversely, supporters of the bill, including members of Forza Italia and Noi Moderates, criticized the abstentions as a lack of empathy for those wrongfully deprived of freedom. The bill now moves to the Senate for examination, expected to resume in September.
