Italian Chamber approves realignment of provincial mandates

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved the Public Administration Decree, which includes a provision to realign the terms of provincial presidents with their respective provincial councils. The measure passed with 167 votes in favor and 93 against.

Under this new mechanism, if a provincial president's mandate is set to expire before the council's mandate, the president will remain in office until the council's term concludes. This aims to resolve administrative confusion caused by previously staggered expiration dates.

In the Province of Teramo, this change means President Camillo D’Angelo, whose term was originally due to end in January 2027, will now remain in office until 2028 to coincide with the council's expiration. Similarly, in the Province of Frosinone, President Luca Di Stefano will have his term extended until March 2028. However, the law stipulates that a president will still lose their position if they lose their role as mayor in their respective municipality.
