Italian Chamber approves Viareggio railway disaster memorial museum
The Italian Chamber of Deputies has unanimously approved a bill to establish a museum dedicated to the memory of the Viareggio railway disaster, which occurred on June 29, 2009. The legislation, which passed with 242 votes in favor, now moves to the Senate for examination.
Promoted by a cross-party coalition including Forza Italia and the Democratic Party, the museum aims to serve as both a memorial for the 32 victims and an educational center. The project intends to host workshops and school programs to promote railway safety awareness and prevent future tragedies.
Debate remains regarding the museum's funding. While the approved text allocates 4 million euros for the facility, critics from the Democratic Party argue that the 50,000 euros allocated for annual operating costs is insufficient. The original proposal had requested 1 million euros per year for operations. Additionally, local efforts are underway to secure symbolic artifacts from the disaster, such as the ruptured tank and the picket, to be housed within the museum.
