Italian charities launch Ferragosto solidarity initiatives for homeless

Various charitable organizations in Italy are organizing solidarity initiatives for the Ferragosto holiday to support homeless populations facing extreme summer heat.

In Modena, the Porta Aperta association continues its service, providing meals and essential hygiene facilities. The organization reported serving 103,515 free meals in 2025 and maintains a shower service that increases capacity from 40 to 60 daily showers during the summer months to assist those living on the streets.

Progetto Arca is expanding its traditional 'anguriata' (watermelon distribution) to four major cities: Milan, Rome, Naples, and Bari. On August 14, volunteers will use mobile kitchens to provide fresh fruit, drinks, hygiene kits, and essential goods to approximately 100 people in each city, aiming to combat isolation and heat-related distress.

Additionally, the Opera Cardinal Ferrari in Milan is preparing for its traditional large Ferragosto lunch, with over 200 homeless individuals expected to attend.
