Italian Chemical Society to host analytical chemistry congress in Mestre

The XXXII National Congress of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society will be held from September 6 to 10 at the Ca’ Foscari Scientific Campus in Mestre. The event aims to foster collaboration and support young talent, bringing together approximately 400 researchers from Italian universities and research centers.

The program features international plenary speakers, including researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, and the Technical University of Crete. A key focus of current research discussed includes the development of advanced laboratory techniques capable of identifying substances at extremely low concentrations within complex samples.

As a significant case study in high-sensitivity analytical techniques, the congress will reference the ‘Sinner case’. This involves the detection of infinitesimal traces of clostebol, a synthetic anabolic steroid, during anti-doping controls. In that instance, instruments identified a concentration of 86 picograms per milliliter—less than one billionth of a gram per milliliter—demonstrating the precision of modern analytical tools which also find application in environmental contaminant monitoring.
