Italian cinema attendance nears pre-pandemic levels in 2026

Italian cinema is experiencing a significant recovery, with box office data through August 20, 2026, showing nearly 55 million spectators and over 415 million euros in revenue. Attendance has grown by approximately 35% compared to the same period in 2025.

While revenue is influenced by rising ticket prices and premium screenings, actual attendance figures provide a clearer picture of consumer behavior. In the first seven months of 2026, Italian theaters recorded 48.26 million admissions. This represents a growth of over 25% year-over-year and brings attendance levels within 7% of the pre-pandemic average (2017–2019).

The summer months have been particularly strong. In May, attendance exceeded 7.5 million, a 72.5% increase over May 2025 and 2.5% above pre-pandemic averages. July also saw high engagement with over 7.7 million spectators.
