Italian cities Bergamo and Bologna launch zero‑emission bus services

From 3 August 2026 Bergamo will operate the e‑BRT, Lombardy’s first electric rapid‑bus line. Funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the service uses fully electric buses on dedicated lanes, park‑and‑ride facilities and priority corridors to cut travel times, noise and local air pollution. The model is being promoted as a replicable template for other Italian municipalities.

In spring 2026 Bologna’s public‑transport operator TPER will introduce a fleet of 127 hydrogen‑fuel‑cell buses, the largest zero‑emission bus fleet in Italy. The €74.9 million investment, also supported by PNRR funds, includes on‑site hydrogen refuelling stations and aims to help the city meet its 2030 carbon‑neutral goal, cutting roughly 7 700 t of CO₂ annually. The hydrogen buses match diesel performance while emitting only water vapour.
