Italian cities Catania and Livorno unveil major public‑works projects

In Catania’s San Cristoforo district, the Largo Don Pino Puglisi was inaugurated after a full regeneration. The renovated space includes a five‑a‑side football field, a equipped children’s playground, and a tree‑lined square with modern lighting. The ceremony was attended by the mayor, council members, police officials and local residents, and the project forms part of the national “Decreto Caivano” plan for vulnerable urban areas.

In Livorno, a new bridge on Via Enrico Toti was opened, completing the third phase of flood‑risk mitigation for the Rio Maggiore basin. Funded with €6 million, the work involved demolishing an old culvert, creating a larger open‑air channel and building a reinforced concrete bridge to improve water flow and safety. The mayor and the president of the Tuscany region highlighted the project’s role in preventing future flood disasters, referencing the tragic 2017 flood.
