Italian cities clash over public funding for sports venues

In Vasto Marina, the municipal sports hall known as the Palahistonium has been closed since 2016 and left in a state of neglect. A 2021 proposal from the Italian Table Tennis Federation to refurbish the facility at a cost of €1.132 million, without municipal expense, was not pursued due to missing documentation. The city council has now issued a public tender seeking at least €400 000 plus VAT to redevelop the site, with a possible 15‑year concession and options for extensions tied to additional private investment.

In Milan, the Arena Santa Giulia – built for the 2026 Olympic Games – is at the centre of a dispute over “extra‑cost” reimbursements. Eventim, the arena’s operator, claims €134 million in additional expenses, of which the state has so far recognised €21 million. The municipality estimates the extra cost at €53 million, excluding raw‑material price hikes, and plans to appoint a third party to assess further claims. Council members have debated whether public subsidies for the large private operator are justified, contrasting the arena’s Olympic legacy with concerns about market fairness.
