Italy: Local initiatives address urban decay and environmental sustainability
Various Italian municipalities and organizations are implementing diverse strategies to combat urban decay and promote environmental stewardship. In Cosenza, the “Adotta una Via” program has been launched to foster collaboration between the administration and local businesses to enhance street identity and urban attractiveness.
In Cerveteri, the Etruria Eco Festival has donated approximately 150 trees, including olive and citrus varieties, to be planted in public parks and school courtyards. Similarly, in the Salento region, Mapei has delivered 1,500 Xylella-resistant olive trees to local farmers to support the regeneration of the area’s olive groves.
Conversely, several regions report ongoing struggles with civic responsibility. Officials in Castrovillari and Pescara have expressed frustration over illegal waste dumping and lack of respect for public spaces. In Jesi, Legambiente volunteers discovered significant amounts of abandoned refuse, including household items and shopping carts, along the Esino river during a cleanup initiative.
