Italian cities face calls for public debate on urban planning
In Sulmona, city councilors Katia Di Marzio of the Democratic Party and Ornella La Civita of Casa Riformista have called for a public debate regarding the definitive approval of urbanized territory boundaries. They argue that such a significant decision, which impacts local development, businesses, and land protection, must involve economic categories, professional orders, and technical experts rather than being decided solely within administrative technical offices.
In Bologna, a coalition of committees, unions, and social groups—including Potere al Popolo, Usb, and Ecoresistenze—has requested a public inquiry into urban transformations. The group seeks to address the housing crisis, the shortage of public services, and the protection of urban green spaces. They advocate for a strong public management of territory, arguing that planning should prioritize collective interests and public housing over private real estate interests, particularly regarding disused areas and former barracks.
