Italian cities implement seasonal anti-smog and traffic restrictions
Several Italian cities, including Rimini and Verona, are reinstating seasonal anti-smog measures starting October 1 to improve air quality.
In Rimini, traffic restrictions will remain in effect until March 31, 2027. The measures target diesel vehicles up to Euro 4 and gasoline/LPG/methane vehicles up to Euro 2 within the urban area near the state highway 16 during weekday business hours. Additionally, civil heating systems, including biomass, are permitted to operate starting November 1. The city is also reintroducing the Move-In service, which allows certain vehicles to travel a set number of kilometers annually via a black box installation.
In Verona, Mayor Damiano Tommasi has signed ordinances to restrict highly polluting vehicles in accordance with Veneto Region regulations. New compensatory measures include extending urban traffic bans until 19:30 on weekdays. During orange or red alert levels, restrictions will apply daily, including weekends. Furthermore, the heating season for public and commercial buildings using fossil fuels or biomass has been adjusted, and the use of 5-star biomass heaters will be restricted during high-alert periods, unless they are the sole heating source available.
