Italian cities boost police staffing and community services

Bolzano will receive 32 new State police officers in August, while the police union stresses a lack of affordable housing for the recruits. In Pesaro, the municipal council has appointed eight new local police agents, half on permanent contracts, to strengthen patrols during the summer tourism season. Poggibonsi inaugurated a mobile local police office to improve proximity to citizens in outlying districts and at public events. Trieste reported that about ten percent of the roughly one hundred citizen tips received by its “Rioni sicuri” patrol have led to investigations or further inquiries. In Parma, the CNEL’s permanent secretariat convened local authorities, prison officials and employers to discuss work and training programmes aimed at reducing recidivism among detainees. Together, these initiatives illustrate a broader push across Italian municipalities to expand police presence, improve community engagement and address reintegration of former inmates.
