Italian local authorities crack down on illegal housing and tourist rentals

Police inspections in several Italian municipalities have uncovered serious violations of housing and tourism regulations. In Cesano Maderno, the local police found eight people living in an apartment of less than 40 m² and fined the owners €8,000 for failing to report the accommodation under immigration law. A similar operation in Riccione revealed a hotel housing 90 guests despite a declared capacity of 36, leading to 13 administrative warnings, seven fines and six criminal complaints. The Riccione checks also highlighted unsafe conditions such as non‑fire‑rated mattresses.

In Caserta, municipal officials intensified checks on the tourist‑tax system using the Paytourist app, cross‑referencing data with police records to recover unpaid fees and sanction establishments that do not display the mandatory National Identification Code (CIN). Fines range from €500 to €5,000, and repeat offenders face immediate suspension of activity.

Rimini’s police also inspected 27 short‑term rentals in the city centre, issuing five formal warnings and at least one fine for operating without the required CIN and proper registration. These coordinated actions demonstrate a broader effort by Italian local authorities to enforce compliance in the housing and tourism sectors, protect public safety, and secure municipal revenues.
