Italian Coast Guard Seizes 14 Tonnes Red Tuna in Catania Operation

The Italian Coast Guard, coordinated by the Maritime Directorate of Catania, carried out the “Ghost Landing” operation in June to combat illegal activities in the tuna supply chain. Inspectors seized approximately 14 tonnes of red tuna, identified 80 administrative violations and confiscated 20 fishing gear items used without proper authorization. Sanctions totalled around €160,000. The seized fish underwent veterinary checks; portions deemed fit for human consumption were donated to charitable associations, while the rest were disposed of according to procedures. The operation highlighted the need for proper permits, guarantee seals and documentation to ensure legal provenance of red tuna, which is subject to strict European Union quotas and licensing rules.
