Italian coastal towns tackle beach accessibility and safety upgrades
In Corigliano Rossano, the mayor announced investments to make municipal beaches safer and accessible for people with disabilities. Local disability advocates argue that the promised services—lifeguard coverage from July 10 to August 31, limited assistance hours, mandatory reservations, and the availability of accessible showers, parking and toilets—are either inconsistent with official signage or not fully operational, limiting the right to equal beach use.
In the neighboring town of Comacchio, officials discussed a security plan that includes funding for night surveillance of beach facilities, the deployment of private security "tutors," and the introduction of an urban daspo to bar repeat offenders from returning for up to three years. The initiative, backed by the mayor and provincial authorities, aims to curb vandalism, assaults and other disturbances during the high‑tourist summer season, building on recent crime reductions reported by the Carabinieri.
