Italian communities drive social innovation through territorial regeneration

Carmela Tiso, national spokesperson for Accademia Iniziativa Comune and president of the Bandiera Bianca association, has highlighted a growing trend of social innovation within Italian communities. She describes a movement where citizens are actively organizing to reinvent their territories through collective transformation processes.

These initiatives focus on reclaiming unused buildings to create cultural centers, social coworking spaces, neighborhood libraries, and youth laboratories. Beyond architectural regeneration, Tiso emphasizes that this movement is relational, aiming to rebuild trust and a sense of belonging in areas that have previously suffered from isolation or loss of services. Examples of these grassroots efforts include community gardens, mutual aid networks for vulnerable families, and intergenerational projects.
