Italy celebrates Grandparents' Day with nationwide community events
Across Italy, various communities and organizations are hosting events to celebrate Grandparents' Day on October 2. These initiatives aim to foster intergenerational dialogue and honor the social role of the elderly.
In Florence, the Associazione Nazionale Lavoratori Anziani (Anla) will present its 2026 report at Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The study, curated by Benedetta Landi, examines the role of grandparents as “ancore valoriali” (value anchors) for expatriate Italian families, exploring how transnational relationships are maintained through virtual channels.
Local celebrations include a commemorative event in Messina, a “bridge between generations” in Guardia Piemontese, and a laughter yoga workshop in Ferrara. In Pordenone, the 50&Più association is hosting a contest for elementary school students to share stories about their grandparents. Other activities range from musical performances in Brindisi to specialized educational workshops and a dedicated day at the Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium.
Additionally, the city of Agrigento is using the occasion to host an information day focused on preventing scams targeting the elderly, featuring experts from the Postal Police and social services.
