Italian community library initiatives highlight cultural accessibility
Cultural initiatives in Italy are focusing on the role of libraries as community hubs. As part of the Campania Libri Festival, the Giardino Segreto di Roccaromana will present ‘La biblioteca, di chi?’ on October 2, 2026, at the BiblioHub in Naples. The event aims to explore how libraries are designed and managed to foster community participation and cultural accessibility.
In San Giorgio a Cremano, the ‘LeggerMente’ project has concluded after two years of transforming the Sac. Giovanni Alagi municipal library into a civic center. Managed by the ParteNeapolis cooperative and supported by Fondazione CON IL SUD, the initiative introduced services such as ‘Biblio(in)bici’—a bicycle-based book delivery service—and ‘Quiet Points’ for students needing focused environments. The project emphasized accessibility through staff training and community-led space design.
