Italian community projects promote citizenship and integration

In the town of Vita, Sicily, the Badia Grande cooperative organized a ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic, handing out 40 pocket copies of the Constitution to migrants from Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Gambia, Venezuela, Cameroon and Mali. The event highlighted the role of newcomers in local society and combined cultural workshops with civic education.

In Palermo, the Scuola Beltrani completed an active‑citizenship project that combined anti‑bullying education with a mock election. Students elected three peers to represent them on a permanent municipal working group and on the school’s anti‑bullying committee. The initiative won a national award and a €3,000 prize for new teaching materials. Both projects illustrate how Italian municipalities and schools are using civic‑education activities to foster inclusion, legal awareness and community participation.
