Italian commuters escalate protests over regional rail service failures

Commuter groups across Italy are intensifying their efforts to address chronic railway service disruptions, including delays, cancellations, and reduced frequencies.

In the Lazio region, the Comitato Pendolari Litoranea Roma Nord – FL5 held a public assembly in Ladispoli to shift strategy. Rather than solely denouncing daily issues, the group aims to precisely identify the specific responsibilities and obligations of Regione Lazio, Trenitalia, and RFI to ensure verifiable accountability.

In Lombardy, the political party Azione has joined the ‘Lombardia si muove’ movement to protest regional rail inefficiencies. On September 26, organizers plan to hold demonstrations and collect signatures for the Minister of Transport. A major focus is the Luino-Switzerland cross-border line; despite significant Swiss investment for track upgrades, the frequency of S30 suburban trains has dropped from two per hour to just four per day, and speeds on the Italian section remain limited to 30 km/h.
