Italian conferences address classical language teaching methods

Two conferences in Italy are set to examine the teaching and relevance of classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, in modern education.

In Crotone, Calabria, the Liceo Classico Pitagora is hosting a national conference focused on the “Ruggiero Method.” Developed by Giampiero Ruggiero, this pedagogical approach emphasizes the active use of ancient languages to facilitate translation, rather than relying solely on rule memorization. The event involves academic representatives from the Universities of Bologna, Pavia, Salento, and Cassino and di Lazio Meridionale.

In Carmagnola, Piedmont, the Associazione ex Allievi of the Guglielmo Baldessano classical high school will hold a seminar titled “The life of words.” This event will explore the role of classical formation in the era of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities. The program includes discussions on integrating technological tools with humanities and will conclude with an awards ceremony for high-achieving students and a tour of the recently restored school facilities.
