Italian consumer groups slam insufficient fuel tax cuts

Consumer advocacy groups in Italy are criticizing recent government measures regarding fuel costs and taxation. The Unione Nazionale Consumatori has labeled the diesel excise duty reduction as “ridiculous” and insufficient, particularly noting the lack of support for gasoline prices. The group also expressed frustration over the decision to abolish the car tax (bollo auto) for vehicles up to 80 kW, calling the policy inconsistent and illogical.

In Calabria, Federconsumatori Calabria reported that local fuel prices remain significantly higher than the national average, with diesel reaching €2.288 per liter and gasoline at €2.165 per liter. The organization argues that the government's tax exemptions do not compensate for the rising cost of living and inflation. To mitigate the impact on families, Federconsumatori Calabria is proposing immediate discounts of at least 20 cents on gasoline and 30 cents on diesel, alongside stricter controls to prevent speculation within the supply chain.
