Italian Councils Approve Demolition of Contested Sites in Ravenna and Modena

On 16 July the Ravenna City Council voted unanimously to condemn the Pialassa dei Piomboni wetland, a fragile area within the Po Delta that has long been pressured by industrial and port development. The council endorsed a new project by Consorzio Adriatico to construct docks, plazas and roads on the site, an intervention valued at around €40 million despite the area’s protected status.

On 23 July the Modena City Council approved the recognition of an off‑budget debt of roughly €10 000 stemming from a court ruling that the municipality had illegally occupied part of the private property owned by the company Le Pile at the former Mulino di Cibeno. The court ordered the removal of the unauthorized cycle‑path works and the demolition of the mill structures, with a view to restoring the site to its original condition.

Both councils are acting on legal judgments and are moving forward with demolition or redevelopment plans for disputed urban‑environmental sites.
