Italy Halts Carla Zambelli Extradition Over Unclear Medical Guarantees

The Italian Court of Cassation annulled the authorization to extradite former Brazilian deputy Carla Zambelli, ruling that Brazil failed to provide detailed information on the medical assistance she would receive in prison. The judges also rejected the defence’s claim that Zambelli was the target of political persecution.

The decision sends the case back to the Rome Court of Appeal for a new assessment, including whether Brazil can guarantee continuous specialist care and medication for Zambelli’s health condition.

During the legal proceedings, Zambelli’s whereabouts in Italy remained unclear; the last public appearance was at a church gathering in Rome. After being released from Italian custody in May, she returned to social media, announcing her mother’s pre‑candidacy for Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. Italian deputy Angelo Bonelli commented that Zambelli may be waiting for Brazil’s October elections, hoping a potential Bolsonaro‑aligned government could consider a pardon.
