Italian court blocks extradition of former Brazilian deputy Carla Zambelli

Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation annulled Brazil’s request to extradite former federal deputy Carla Zambelli, citing doubts about the impartiality of Brazil’s judiciary, particularly the involvement of Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The court emphasized that guarantees such as a fair trial, due process and judicial independence must be respected in international cooperation.

In Brazil, a São Paulo court dismissed the defamation lawsuit brought by Zambelli against journalist Luan Araújo. The journalist’s fine was paid by supporters, leading the judge to consider the penalty satisfied and close the case. Zambelli, previously sentenced in Brazil for illegal firearms possession and illegal interference with the National Justice Council’s electronic system, had fled to Italy to avoid incarceration. The extradition denial may set a precedent for other pending international requests.
