Italian Court of Cassation annuls Carla Zambelli extradition over Alexandre de Moraes bias

Italy’s Court of Cassation, the nation’s highest judicial authority, ruled on 12 June that former Brazilian federal deputy Carla Zambelli’s extradition to Brazil should be cancelled. The court said minister Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Court acted with a “dual role,” both judging the case and being a party affected by the alleged crimes, creating a conflict of interest.

Zambelli had been convicted for hacking the National Council of Justice’s system and for illegal firearm possession linked to the 2022 elections, leading to the loss of her parliamentary mandate in São Paulo in 2025. Following the Italian decision, she was released and posted a video saying, “Hoje é dia 22 de maio 2026, dia de Santa Rita…”. The matter now awaits a response from Italy’s Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, who has 45 days to act on the ruling.
