Italian court sets September 28 sentencing for Egyptian agents in Giulio Regeni murder case

The First Criminal Court in Rome held a hearing on the trial of four Egyptian National Security Agency officers accused of kidnapping, torturing and murdering Italian researcher Giulio Regeni in Cairo in January 2016. Defence lawyers for the suspects presented their arguments, contesting the evidence and the reliability of witnesses. The prosecution, led by prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco, has asked for a life sentence for one defendant and 17 years and six months for the others. The court scheduled the delivery of the verdict for 28 September.

Family lawyer Alessandra Ballerini described the proceedings as painful and highlighted the long‑lasting quest for justice, linking the case to the recent detention of Italian citizen Nessi Guerra in Egypt. The upcoming verdict is expected to bring closure to the Regeni family after a decade of legal battles.
