Italian courts issue rulings in separate healthcare administration cases
The Court of Trani has overturned a previous order to convict ASL BT for discrimination against a nurse with severe, certified disabilities. The ruling follows a case where the nurse requested workplace accommodations, such as ergonomic furniture, low-emission monitors, and controlled lighting to manage debilitating migraines. Despite medical recommendations, the district director reportedly ignored these requests and accused the worker of simulating her condition. The INPS Medical Verification Commission subsequently confirmed the worker's pathologies.
In a separate matter, the Court of Oristano has issued several convictions in the ‘Ippocrate’ trial, which investigated irregular hiring practices and public competitions within the former ASL 5 between 2014 and 2019. The first-instance ruling includes convictions for former officials, including a former mayor and a regional councilor, with prison sentences ranging from six to eight years. The trial originated from a 2017 investigation into the increased use of temporary agencies for hiring within the Oristano healthcare organization.
