Italian courts review new evidence in two high-profile homicide cases

In the investigation into the death of Eleonora Guidi in Rufina, a judge has reserved a decision on a request for a new expert assessment regarding the mental capacity of Lorenzo Innocenti. Innocenti, who was charged with killing Guidi with 24 stab wounds before attempting suicide by jumping from a window, is currently unable to participate in the trial due to brain injuries sustained during the fall. He is currently under supervised liberty and undergoing neurological and psychiatric treatment.

Separately, in the trial concerning the death of 58-year-old Daniela Gaiani in Castello d’Argile, new digital forensic evidence has emerged. An expert for the civil parties testified that the defendant Leonardo Magri’s phone switched from Wi-Fi to mobile data during two brief sessions in the early morning of September 5, 2021. The court is also considering requests for a new medico-legal assessment to contest the established time of death, as well as a judicial experiment involving physical evidence. A decision on these matters is expected at the next hearing on December 14.
