Italian cultural events commemorate Spanish Civil War
Various cultural and historical initiatives in Italy are commemorating the Spanish Civil War and its connection to international antifascism.
In Genoa, the Fondazione Diesse, in collaboration with the CGIL Liguria pensioners' union and the Fondazione Luigi Longo, is hosting an event titled “A las cinco de la tarde. Sollevazione militare, Resistenza e caduta della Repubblica: la morte della democrazia in Spagna (1936-1939)”. The program includes a lecture by Professor Marco Doria, the presentation of unpublished photographs by Luigi Ratti, and an analysis of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” by art critic Linda Kaiser. The event will also feature a documentary regarding Italian antifascist volunteers.
In Modena, the Festivalfilosofia features an installation titled “Guernica. La guerra in una nuova prospettiva” at the Galleria Europa. Organized by Europe Direct Modena and the Istituto storico di Modena, the project uses Picasso’s famous painting as a starting point for participatory workshops. Participants, including students, are invited to contribute to a large-scale reproduction of the painting to reflect on the chaos of war and draw parallels between historical events and contemporary issues.
