Italian cultural exhibitions highlight women's history through photography

Various cultural initiatives in Italy are highlighting the historical role of women in the nation's development through photography and archives.

In Naples, the Associazione Aerma Polani APS will present '80 Repubblica: Memorie di donne' from October 16 to 25, 2026, at Castel Nuovo. The multimedia project, directed by Gabriele Colafranceschi, features analog photography and video testimonies from women over eighty who lived through the foundational decades of the Italian Republic. The exhibition aims to showcase diverse experiences in politics, family, work, and religion.

Additionally, the APICE archive in Apice will host an event on October 22 as part of the 'Archivi Aperti' festival. Using the 'La Notte' photographic archive, the exhibition will explore the evolution of female identity and social roles in 20th-century Italy, examining how photojournalism has shaped the collective imaginary regarding women's achievements and societal transformations.
