Italian Customs report surge in counterfeit goods seizures
The Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM) has reported significant seizures of counterfeit products, with over 5 million items confiscated in 2025 and more than 730,000 in the first half of 2026.
According to data presented at the National Anti-Fraud Network conference, counterfeit goods primarily enter Italy through three channels: commercial maritime shipping via containers, passenger luggage from international travel, and a growing volume of e-commerce shipments. The high frequency of small e-commerce deliveries presents a particular challenge for customs inspections.
Key categories affected include toys, games, and sporting goods, followed by tobacco, clothing, accessories, food, beverages, and cosmetics. ADM Director Roberto Alesse noted that illegal trade impacts the 'Made in Italy' brand and can lead to serious environmental and social consequences. The agency is focusing on data analysis, laboratory testing, and improved information sharing to combat these illicit trafficking evolutions.
