Italy's data‑protection authority fines two TV shows €60 k over Chiara Poggi images
The Italian Garante for the protection of personal data imposed a total fine of about €59,606 on broadcaster RTI Spa for two programmes – Le Iene Inside and Zona Bianca – after they aired graphic footage of the corpse of Chiara Poggi, the 26‑year‑old murder victim of the 2007 Garlasco case. The regulator said the images showed blood and injuries that added no informational value, violated the dignity of the victim and her family and breached the principle of essentiality of information. It ordered the immediate removal of the footage and prohibited any further dissemination. The fines were €51,091 for Le Iene and €8,515 for Zona Bianca. The action follows complaints filed by Poggi’s parents, Giuseppe Poggi and Rita Preda, and comes as the Garlasco investigation has been reopened, now including Andrea Sempio.
Pasquale Stanzione, president of the Garante, stated that the broadcast “is not justified under the essentiality of information” and constitutes a serious violation of the victim’s dignity.
