Italian debate on AI-driven genetic selection and Catholic ethics

Advances in molecular genetics and artificial intelligence are enabling the analysis of many genetic variants linked to traits such as height, disease risk and, controversially, cognitive abilities. Researchers can now use pre‑implantation genetic diagnosis to identify embryos with a higher statistical probability of superior intelligence, raising concerns about eugenics, social inequality and the limits of predicting complex traits.

At the same time, Pope Leon XIV’s encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas* calls for technology to serve the person, urging Catholic associations to guide AI development toward the common good. The document stresses that technology is neither inherently hostile nor neutral, and that human governance, transparency and protection of the vulnerable are essential.

Both discussions highlight the need for ethical frameworks that balance scientific possibilities with respect for human dignity, social justice and democratic participation.
