Italian Defence Minister Crosetto reaffirms Atlantic alliance in Washington meeting

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto met U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington for their first bilateral talks. Crosetto said the Italy‑U.S. partnership "has no alternative" and stressed that the bilateral relationship will continue to guarantee Italy’s security.

Hegseth praised Italy’s growing role in European defence, referencing NATO’s shift to a "NATO 3.0" model that will boost operational capabilities, investment and industrial bases. He noted Italy’s leadership in the NATO multinational tactical group in Bulgaria and its willingness to take on a larger share of conventional defence responsibilities.

The ministers also discussed the de‑mining of the Strait of Hormuz, acknowledging the operation’s uncertainties and the need for allied support, with Italy positioned to lead the effort. Crosetto reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to increased defence spending as part of a strong Europe and a strong NATO.
