Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto warns nuclear threat revives amid Ukraine war

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told the foreign and defence committees of the Chamber and Senate that the nuclear threat, once considered a matter of history books, is becoming relevant again as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues.

He said that when the conflict ends Europe will have to cope with extensive financial and energy impacts, the reintegration of a large number of former combatants, and the reconstruction of both Ukraine and Russia. Crosetto cited estimates that total deaths and injuries could approach 2 million by the end of the year, with more than a thousand Russian casualties per day, and described the fighting as the most violent Europe has seen since the end of World II.
