Italian Dialects Surge in Pop Music as Geolier, Carmen Consoli and Setak Lead Trend
Italian regional dialects are experiencing a revival in contemporary pop music. Artists such as Geolier, who popularises Neapolitan, singer‑songwriter Carmen Consoli, who records in Sicilian, and Setak (Nicola Pomponi) from Abruzzo are using their native tongues to convey identity, authenticity and local roots, turning dialect into a mainstream artistic tool.
Setak, a 2024 Targa Tenco laureate, says the dialect is “the language with which I can be most sincere, it lets me say things that in Italian feel more constructed.” He stresses that dialect does not need validation, only good use. The movement is reshaping how Italian audiences and charts receive songs in regional languages, expanding their cultural legitimacy beyond nostalgia or comedy.
The trend reflects a broader shift in Italy’s music scene, where dialects are no longer niche but vital expressions of present‑day life, helping artists reach wider audiences while preserving regional heritage.
