Italian dining culture emphasizes regional specialties and social mealtime habits
Italian dining culture is characterized by regional diversity in food and a strong emphasis on the social aspects of meals. Regional breakfast traditions vary significantly across the country, featuring specific pastries such as brioche in Sicily, pasticciotto in Puglia, maritozzo in Rome, and sfogliatella in Naples.
A study by Unobravo involving 1,670 adults highlights the importance of conviviality in Italy. Palermo ranks among the cities where people spend the most time at the table, averaging 34.8 minutes per meal, following Torino. While 77% of Italians consider sharing meals important for social and emotional well-being, many struggle to do so as desired. Additionally, 73% of respondents noted that digital distractions, such as smartphones, reduce engagement during meals.
