Italian E-550A CAEW returns from Saudi Arabia deployment

The Italian Air Force has recovered its Gulfstream E-550A CAEW (registration MM62303) following a nearly three-month deployment at Taif Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The aircraft returned to Pratica di Mare after being stationed in the region since May 27 to support a task force during tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

During its deployment, the aircraft operated with its transponders deactivated, making its specific missions, flight routes, and frequency of sorties invisible to open-source flight-tracking platforms. The E-550A serves as a critical airborne command-and-control and surveillance asset, providing long-range electronic intelligence and situational awareness.

The return of this aircraft restores Italy’s CAEW capability, which had been significantly limited. The nation’s second E-550A has been undergoing maintenance in Arizona since June, leaving MM62303 as the only operational unit in the fleet.
